Choice of Fibromyalgia Medication

There are other ways to treat fibromyalgia like exercises and counselling but fibromyalgia medication relieves pain which is the main distinctive factor of this condition. Some of the frequently prescribed fibromyalgia medications are analgesics (narcotic and anti-narcotic). Narcotic drugs are only available on prescription only since one may be addicted to them but Anti-narcotic can be purchased over the counter. Anti-narcotic are the most commonly taken to act as pain relievers to relieve pain and reduce muscle stiffness.

Other fibromyalgia medications available include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which are taken alongside other medications. Examples of this medication are ibuprofen, naproxen sodium and aspirin. There has also been a discovery of new medication such as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors that are used to reduce depression, body ache and weakness. Patients with insomnia, anti-depressant medicine are prescribed to reduce stress and help the body to relax. Antidepressant medication often contains doxepin, amitriptyline and nortriptyline components to reduce depression and help fibromyalgia patients sleep at night.

Occasionally temporary fibromyalgia medication may perhaps be used by patients to treat severe to recurrent symptoms. For example, muscle relaxants are prescribed to reduce muscle pain and minimize chances of muscle stiffness. Anticonvulsants like pregabalin may also be prescribed to ease pain and help patients to have restful sleep. Sleeping pills may also be recommended for these patients in conjunction with other prescribed fibromyalgia medication. These drugs may be very effective if taken according to the physician’s guidelines but can only be used short-term to reduce the adverse side effects. For instance, zolpidem may work on the initial stages of treatment but a patient’s body might develop resistance and they may even have sleeping problems in future.

Patients suffering from chronic joint and muscle pain, the physician may prescribe narcotic drugs which come in resilient dosages to help a few patients but there is no confirmation that narcotic fibromyalgia medication can be most effective to treat extremely severe pain. Most physicians will even avoid prescribing them because of the high possibility of chemical dependence to reduce the pain. The doctor may however prescribe muscle relaxant medication which are taken at bedtime to reduce severe pain and also have sedative effect to help you have restful sleep.

Although fibromyalgia may not have a single cure yet, research has led to the improvement of diagnosis and treatment over the years. A good choice of fibromyalgia medication and supplement drug has been discovered to reduce and help in treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome and there is further research being conducted to find a safer and more effective drug or even cure eventually.
